When The Computer Crashes

October 31, 2011 · 2 comments

I use a partitioned hard drive, meaning it is large, and broken into several virtual hard drives.

Many years ago now I partitioned the C: drive where most of my software is installed. I have always run an automatic defrag program, because I’ve found even though large drives don’t NEED it, they speed things up, and have nice features.

One of the features is to warn you if your drive is getting too full. Well, I stopped using the auto-defrag program about a year ago, and in the meantime the C: drive got full and fragmented, and eventually (today) started causing me a lot of problems. So much so that it’s hard to work on much but getting the computer back into shape.

So I’m going to upgrade to a computer with more RAM (this one only has 3G). Too many modern programs taking up too much RAM.

Windows has been good to me, not crashing I mean, until today. And it’s a bad day to go down, since I’m very busy :(

Thanks John, SSDs are definitely awesome. Mainly, I need to upgrade the OS to allow more RAM total.

As far as all the things in the budget, it just isn’t a high enough priority, but I would LOVE to use a SSD drive.

Sorry to hear about that. Have you thought about a SSD? Probably not enough space if you need a lot of programs, but you don’t need to defrag them and they’re a lot faster! One of the best, cheapest upgrades you can make, along with the RAM.
